Your toxic load refers to the accumulation of chemicals, toxins and other substances in the body.
This occurs through ingestion or absorption through the skin. Everyday our body is bombarded with harmful substances from urban pollution, cleaning and personal products, to the food we eat and water we drink.
Our body works hard to eliminate and detoxify, however if we add additional pressure to our body it can easily become overloaded. Prolonged toxic overload can lead to unpleasant symptoms and chronic illness. For this reason it’s important to actively reduce your toxic load. You can take easy simple steps to detox your life and reduce your toxic load while simultaneously supporting your bodies own detoxification process.
1. Think before you buy
Next time you head out to purchase your next cleaning product, turn it over and read the label. If it has numbers or words you can’t read then put it back on the shelf. Don’t unconsciously buy because of old habits. Purchase from this day forward because it benefits us nutritionally, ethically and because of its sustainability.
2. Embrace green cleaning products.
Natural plant based or chemical free house hold products. From silicon and wax food wrappers to compostable paper and coffee pods. Cleaning products that don’t have the hidden nasties and that include essential oils, not only help you but also keep your family and pets away from harmful chemicals.
3. Ditch the perfume
Conventional perfumes are known hormone disrupters and can irritate the skin. Once again naturally derived perfumes are available for our own personal pleasure and use.
4. Detox the beauty cabinet.
Toss out the old cosmetics, skin care and personal products and switch. Apply the same rule of purchase that you do now for all your purchases. Ask the questions. What’s it made of? Where is it made and how? Is the company ethical and supports the environment and its people. Does it test on animals? Free from all nasties? Questions bring knowledge.
5. Fix your gut
Your gut plays an integral role in your detoxification process. If your bowel movement is sluggish, you have leaky gut or similar conditions then this can increase your toxic load.
6. Incorporate detoxifying foods and nutrients.
Cruciferous vegetables and other foods support your livers detoxification as well as foods that feed beneficial bacteria such as prebiotic and soluble fibre foods adds to your health and well-being.
7. Upgrade your water
Purchase a water filter not only for you to drink but for your shower and bath. If purchasing bottled water then stick to glass bottles or carry your own.
8. Avoid BPAs
Avoid plastic containers that contain BPAs. Use glass containers that can be reused for storing food and drinks
9. Go organic and seasonal, home made and artisan.
Choose organic where possible. Dirty dozen and clean15 food list are a great resource. The outside borders inside of the supermarket is produce and whole foods while inner isles are where the high processed foods are. Small bakers, farmers markets, home grown and home made meals are so much healthier for us and taste so good. Once you start adopting this way of life you will wonder why you resisted for so long.
